Caring for Succulents

Caring for Succulents

Following are some general suggestions for caring for your succulents, but these observations are offered only as broad guidelines.

Cultivated plants need your careful attention. Indoors, they should be in a sunny location, at or near a window that faces south, east, or west. If you move your plants outdoors in summer, introduce them to direct sun gradually. When it comes to temperature generally speaking, your normal room temperature will suffice, except when plants are setting flower buds, at which time most succulents require cooler nights.

Most succulents must be kept in doors in winter, but in summer, many appreciate being moved outdoors, providing their light needs and other requirements are met. Plants need more water during their active growth period (usually spring&summer). Frequency of watering differs by species and also depends on variables such as soil texture, humidity, light, temperature, and pot size. Indoor plants may need water once or twice a week during active growth, while outdoor plants need much less, sometimes only during prolonged periods of drought provide very little water or light misting during winter dormancy.

Over-watering is probably the main cause of succulent death. If you're planning on fertilizing the growing season is generally from March to October.
